Working with pastel is delightful, and in some ways not unlike oil – insomuch as you can really get your hands dirty. I love the smudgy loose effects you can achieve, such as for the bruised Scottish skies over Loch Lomond in one of the pieces here. I use Unison soft pastels, and generally work on textured, stretched watercolour paper. The dimples pick up loads of colour, enabling (when you want it) a really dense, saturated look.
