Van
Den Neste
This Belgian painter was born in Brussels on June 7, 1922. From an
early age, his talent for graphic art was spotted by his teachers
who encouraged him to lead an artistic career. He then took up an
interest in all facets of art: decorative painting, publicity, landscape,
and sculpture. He attended the workshops of several painters. In
1948, he met an ageing Magritte who discovered his talent and offered
him to attend his studio. He then struck a friendship with the circle
of surrealist painters and writers surrounding Magritte, and with
Paul Delvaux especially, who also influenced him.Van den Neste remained
a teacher throughout his life, ending his professional career as
Director of the Molenbeck Academy of Drawing and Decorative Arts
in Brussels. Simultaneously he pursued his interests in surrealism
and tapestry. His works can be found in numerous Belgian museums
and private collections in Belgium and abroad. His work is featured
in the private collections of the Belgian royal family, especially
under the rein of King Baudouin.
